Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix / Chapter 26 "Seen and Unforeseen" / by J.K.Rowling
... He raised his wand: "One - two - three - Legilimens!" ... Harry raised his own wand. "Protego!" Snape staggered - his wand flew upwards, away from Harry - and suddenly Harry's mind was teeming with memories that were not his: a hook-nosed man was shouting at a cowering woman, while a small dark-haired boy cowered in a corner ... a greasy-haired teenager sat alone in a dark bedroom, pointing his wand at the ceiling, shooting down flies ... Beautiful and sensitive portrait, this does look like a sudden peek into a private, solitary scene. I like the seedy details & tattered clothes, and the vacant look on the lonely kid's face. The composition draws the viewer's eye straight to Snape. Really well done

Ew! why do you suppose the Snapes had that many flies in their house? Did Sev leave an old half eaten ham and cheese sandwich under his bed? Dead cat outside the window? Really great job!. I thing you caught the bored/depressed/apathetic teen expression perfectly
Severus looks so tired, frustrated, sad, but at the same time hollow and blank. You have done a fantastic job of capturing all that in so small and simple a piece. This is simply wonderful.

This is great - so detailed. I love the dark, forlorn atmosphere of the picture - Snape, alone and bored/frustrated in his room - the letter (presumably the one from Hogwarts, that shows he is special?) and pictures of Lilies?? on the wall, the cloak over the bedpost. Super job!
... and you're perfectly right - it is the Hogwarts letter, and he even kept the envelope (he must have opened and re-closed it magically, so it would look nearly untouched), for the reason you described above. And as I am convinced that Snape had had a romantic vein, well hidden of course, he kept - you're, again, absolutely right - a dried lily and a photograph of that flower (magically sellotaped to the wall). Had he kept a picture of Lily, his father surely would have sneered at him, wouldn't he?
... I went back to real illustrating - using decorating and beautifying details. It's like writing, there's a difference between a message text and poetry ... but you know that well!
Well, actually I don't know where all these flies came from, truth be told. I just thought it gave the picture something ... surreal ... and a deeper meaning, because a. flies represent neglect, decay, death ... in the figurative sense, in this case; and b. these flies stand for the "Lord of the Flies", the synonym for the propensity to violence.
But there could have been a dead cat outside the window, you never know, Spinner's End doesn't sound like the best part of town to me ...
